Re: Scouting Now: Leadership

Our council runs a course for something like this:

Course Description A 6 hour interactive course that will provide you with vital techniques and practical tips on how to effectively communicate and effectively work with Scouting youth. Take this opportunity to build upon and greatly enhance your relationships with the various youth in your group. This meaningful course will focus as well on ways of positively working with disabled youth in order to gain the best abilities from their participation within the group setting. A great deal of what you learn in this session can be most useful in your family setting at home as well.

2009/10/17 Working Effectively With Youth and Youth With Disabilities (851)
Scout Headquarters Michael Burdo (613) 722-3971 burdo@sympatico.ca $5.00 per person
2009/12/05 Working Effectively With Youth and Youth With Disabilities (852)

2010/02/20 Working Effectively With Youth and Youth With Disabilities (853)
Scout Headquarters Michael Burdo (613) 722-3971 burdo@sympatico.ca $5.00 per person
2010/05/15 Working Effectively With Youth and Youth With Disabilities (854)
Scout Headquarters Michael Burdo (613) 722-3971 burdo@sympatico.ca $5.00 per person

I will admit that I do not have the patience or inclination to learn these techniques.

I presume that Michael Burdo is a member of your Council, or at least close by.
What I meant was a Course designed and offered by Scouts Canada...although I do wish that I had somebody like Scouter Burdo over here to do that.
For the record and so I can do a search among our people, what are his qualifications to do this kind of work (Imean that in a friendly way so I can have some kind of guide to what I would be looking for here)
Thanks

Thanks Karl, I'll E-Mail him, maybe, just maybe, there is an Association and he can refer me to someone over here.

Re: Scouting Now: Leadership

re. Action Item 1 - Background. Yes, most of what is now Part I Training is really 'orientation' to Scouting (i.e. BPP!, resources, etc.), and can easily be done 'out of the book' or 'on-line'. But, to be really effective new leaders have to learn more than just Rules and Procedures and what forms and approvals have to be satisfied! Training HAS TO BE FOCUSED on HOW to deliver great programs for the particular section.
    First, provide the Computer Based Training proposed;
      Then, let's get serious and start developing the 'expertise' of delivering effective programs in a meaningful Part I that gets them involved with the practicalities of the program;
        Training also includes intensive support from 'experienced leaders', where-in the new leaders are coached and mentored to do real programs with real kids in a real Scouting environment.
