Equipment Purchasing Discounts

Here is a presentation I put together on the equipment discounts I found or negotiated when I was purchasing items. While some of the information is Ottawa centric, much of it is national or international. Also included are sections on repair, importing, and HST recovery as they are relevant to equipment purchasing.

Hi Allan,
This is awesome. I have shared it with my GC and suggested that she share it with Area. Good work. This is the kind of collaboration that we need to see more of.

Re: Equipment Purchasing Discounts

Maybe we can add to your list on an ongoing basis here.

In Alberta Campers Village (Calgary and Edmonton) gives a 10% discoutn and has given our group an extra discount for larger buys (like tents).

Valhalla Pure (Alberta and BC) offer a 10% discount to scouting members but you have to set it up with the store managers each year as they like to have a current membership card on file to compare to.

The Scouts Canada Wiki (wiki.scouts.ca) might be a good place to store the list - that way stuff won't get lost in a pile of replies.

A start of such a list has begun as "Scout Friendly Stores". Please feel free to add stores and how they give special discounts or other privileges to Scouts Canada members.

Lebaron (Markham store anyway) gives 10% off to scouts
My understanding is Tentcity in Toronto also gives a discount

Not exactly a discount- But Cabela's Canada allows Non-profits (like us!!!) Use their meeting rooms for free. Makes for an interesting meeting place with all the animals! They've also done tours for groups- They're very good to us in Edmonton!

Need some traction to help get our volunteers access to ProDeals on equipment - see http://sectionhiker.com/how-to-get-pro- ... facturers/ and http://www.promotive.com/ - I don't think anyone can argue with the level of skill of many of our volunteers that they are anything but pros at getting people outdoors.

This is a really interesting idea. I signed up for promotive to see what 'teams' I could join. I figured that either my fulltime job in camping or my volunteer job in Scouts would qualify me for something, but I can't seem to find anything that allow me to qualify.

It would be interesting to see if anyone has found a way in on these. The other thing that I was thinking is Scouts Canada should start our own 'team'. Is that something an individual could/should just do, or does that need to be organized at a higher level?
