I think it is great that Scouts Canada is recognizing our newer leaders. They are vital to the growth and innovation of the organization. However, I think it is much more important that the groups and sections appreciate and recognize the contributions of these leaders.
Although the ‘plated gold watch’ presentation allows the organization to tick off the box that individuals are being honoured I think most volunteers appreciate the more personal and thus more meaningful thank you’s. I know I have appreciated the thoughtfulness that has gone into a variety of gifts of appreciation over the years e.g. home cooked meal after a weekend at camp or a Scouter survival kit (duct tape & coffee/tea) from the youth. I would rather have these 'honours' then the tag on my uniform.
Thus we as an organization and individuals should ensure we develop our local leadership (group commissioners, section leaders, group committees) so we take responsibility for thanking our volunteers and keeping our movement growing. I know I will endeavour to thank those around me more.
