Re: Uniform news?

The uniform looks great to me.

The best images I have seen so far
http://www.globaltoronto.com/video/inde ... P2II1lyg8h

The recorded web-cast is not fully up yet. It stops just as the cub scouts are coming onto the stage.

Does anyone have images of the uniform with badges on it?

Beavers - Absolutely amazing
Cubs - Back to the previous color without the itch. I'm waiting to see it with badges on it. I think this is the only one that I don't like. Hopefuly it is better in person.
Scouts - Looks good both tucked and untucked
Ventures/Rovers/Leaders - Looks great

I'm glad the epaulets are gone. The slip ons never did fit properly. It appears that it they will now be going on the woggle. This is great as the necker and woggle can be worn without the formal shirt.

Seeing the pockets made me happy. I hope there is still the slot for a pen.

Being able to roll up the sleeves is cool.

Re: Uniform news?

Im with you Richie, looks good all around. The negative uniform bashing will hopefully stop once leaders see and touch in real time. I don't think many youth visit this site, as the smashing and bashing going on here from leaders is dispicable, as well as on FB and other threads!

For me, Red is my color and for a 4xl'er I'll be very easy to spot! And I will be very proud to wear my 3rd generation of uniforms in my lifetime, and hope for more before Im dead.

Good Job SC & Joe Fresh - the 1st Anzac Scout Group looks forward to receiving new uniforms when available.

There's also a badge to indicate which section you're leading, which I assume will go on the sleeve. This will help since most (if not all) leaders, including SITs, should at least have their Wood Badge Part 1 woggle.

Re: Uniform news?

I don't think the comments were "negative uniform bashing", as you put it, they were just honest first impressions of the look . You will never make everyone happy, and if we can't give our honest opinions here, why have this forum? There are good and bad parts of the old uniform as well.
I personally like some of it and some I don't, that won't change once I "feel" the material, the material has nothing to do with the parts I don't like. Just because it is new and fresh, doesn't mean we all have to love it. We'll enjoy the parts we like and we'll live with the parts we don't. The parts I don't love won't stop me from enjoying scouting, it's just clothing, after all...

Without being able to hear the tone of voice of see facial expressions it is hard to judge if it is bashing just because people are against change or simple feedback.

Constructive feedback is definitely a reason for having this forum.

@kaa27th Well said. Although there were some comments about the quality of material used by Joe Fresh in the other thread. (the threads should probably be merged)

Re: Uniform news?

True. Some of us with little kids have experience with the current Joe Fresh non-scouting clothing line, and their quality is often questionable. Those comments probably came out of that experience. Let's hope this is different!

Something I worry about is availability of sizing with having different shirts for each section. I have a cub wearing a men's medium shirt in my group. Will the cub shirts come that big? What are we going to do if they don't?

Will the blue pants be mandatory for cubs? Our group so far has allowed blue jeans, as we have a lot of low income families, the $50 for shirt/sash/book was hardship for some, even though we tried to find used whenever we could. And again sizing, my kids wear "slim" pants, everything else is way too big around their waists. Can they just wear blue school uniform type pants?

Just like before, the final decision on what is an acceptable uniform comes down the the leaders in the section. i.e. what parts are mandatory and what substitutions can be made.

I like most of what I see in the new uniform. But while I like baseball caps, I'm not keen on the SC logo on the Cub cap; that should be a wolf cub. Overall actually there seems to be a proliferation os the SC logo on the uniform rather than Scouting logos. I would assume it is part of a push for the public awareness of the Scouts Canada brand of Scouting.

Re: Uniform news?

I'm not opposed to the SC logo proliferation, mainly because the message is fully scout-based, rather than the generic ignoring the past youth group shirts circa was. Pushing Scouting as brand of youth involvement in a area where there is an over saturation of children's activities. Sports teams have hats with their logo, I remember all the kids in my elementary school had baseball hat with their team's logo on it. Makes sense for a cub to have their activity of choice available as a fashionable hat.

Also, I really want a red rover hat. I want one of those now!

Re: Uniform news?

I really think Joe and National missed the mark on this one.

1. Different uniforms for each section. Not very economical, I scout in a low income area in Surrey, BC. With the tan uniform, the youth could wear it til he/she outgrew it, no matter what section or sections, they passed through. Now they will need a new uniform every 3 years, and god forbid if they have a growing spurt part way through a section and need a larger size sooner.

2. Removal of sash. I don't know about you, but our youth only wore their sashes at meetings and special events (i.e.- Rememberance Day, etc) They NEVER brought it to camp, and even at meetings, could remove them for physical activities and crafts. But at least once a badge was sewn on the sash, it stayed there, no matter if they had to change uniform size or not. Now it will be remove and resew on next uniform.

3. What happened to our traditional section colours? Beaver Brown, Cub Yellow, Scout Green, Venturer Blue and Rover Red?

4. No epaulets? Now you identify your sixer and seconds by woggle? Is there any other means? or do I scrap all of mt woggle crafts?

5. Back to the colour, how many red heads look good in Red? And I saw the Venturer and instantly thought Sea Scout! And if they had to have green, they could have picked a better one that that!

I have many other issues with the new styles. I can understand Scouts Canada's desire to make a big splash and keep it under wraps, but i do think they should have had more consultation with the membership before shoving these down our throats. I don't believe a vote by every member would have been practical, but at least we could have provided some feed back! On that note, I guess I am ordering a couple of tan shirts in my size from the Scout shop on Monday, because I do not intend to wear the red (no, i am not a red head, I just don't like it, they should have gone with a neutral colour, like maybe TAN!! ;)

Re: Uniform news?

Couple of thoughts:

Uniform banks operated from the group or area level can easily solve the growing issue. I was a part of a group in east van at 1st and commerical which did this to great success with both the tan shirts and the old wolf cub grey shirts. There was never any issue, with parents and sewing. As for badges? have a meeting of learning how to sew? it's one of those lost skills that are highly useful later in life.

Other groups in East Van haven't been sewing badges on sashes for a long time. I didn't when I was in scouts and it was never an issue.

Colours, they're there. cubs used to wear grey all the time. And Sea scouts in metro vancouver are weird. They generally wear tan with the white/blue epaulettes.

Modify woggle crafts for sixers/seconders?

All i'm saying is that there are ways to adapt.

That's what Sea Scouts here in Ontario wear too - we were told those were the national sea scout colours. Not true?

Re: Uniform news?

Oh, perhaps I should have been more clear.

Generally, Sea scouts have their own epaulettes on the tan uniform. it's the metro vancouver troops that wear the navy blue instead, with different headgear, and shoulder boards and the old placement of badges. Which incidentally, doesn't involve a sash.
