Section Names

Apparently the names of our sections have been changed as of the weekend. No longer Beavers, but Beaver Scouts, no longer Wolf Cubs, but Cub Scouts, Venturer Scouts and Rover Scouts. THink I'll just keep calling them Beavers and Wolf Cubs or Cubs.

Re: Section Names

Those are close to the names used in the UK. Actually, when talking with Joe Public about Venturers I often introduce them as Scouts aged 14-17, as I don't trust most non-Scout people to know what Venturers are and I want to be sure they know we are Scouts. That opens a lot of doors...

On that note, I think the yearly calendars are a great idea to help sections with their program. Though how popcorn counts as a useful theme for a meeting I don't know...

Re: Section Names

Frankly, I like the names. Today at the office I mentioned an activity I had run with my Beavers... You can guess the response.

Every time I mention Beavers, I have to mention Cubs Scouts... Beaver Scouts would make our branding easier. Further, if kids use the branded names, they too will see the progression (hopefully).

My two cents.

Re: Section Names

Aside from the fact that Beavers and Venturers did not exist in his time; B.-P. used the designations: Wolf Cubs, Scouts, and always called the Rovers: Rover Scouts. You will see that in all his writings. See letters to a Rover (not by B.-P. and see Rover Scouting, Gilcraft Series. Re: Section Names

I like the names as well, especially for the branding element. When I tell people about my involvement with Venturers and Rovers, I always have to qualify it by saying their the most senior sections in Scouting.

Earl, I also use The Dump. It's a great place for getting a historical perspective on Scouting. Knowing where we came from helps us know where to go. And some of the "old" ideas can certainly be made new again.

Re: Section Names

I'm pleased to see the new names as it is good for branding.

While I can't see it happening it would be nice if we had a new name for the scout section as well. It was already confusing to talk about scouts (the section) and scouting (the movment) with outside people.

heard about this yesterday and I think it is a great idea! I too have said "I'm taking my Beavers to......." and have gotten the strangest looks, then giggles, then ooooooooooooh! Welcome Beaver Scouts!

Re: Section Names

Is it 'Venturer Scouts' or 'Venture Scouts'?

I have to agree with kbpedersen

Easier for me to say Cub Scout than Wolf cubs.. it did bring some confusion among some of my friends and co-workers..

Re: Section Names

@ Earl What was the point you are trying to get across?
Were you saying that 'Leader Scout' is backwards or that by the scout level the youth should be taking over the leadership so we should refer to ourselves are Scouters? By referring to ourselves as leaders the youth feel more dependent on us to lead them instead of leading themselves. Also in common use Scouter is used as a title ex) 'Scouter <FirstName>' instead of 'Mr <LastName>'
