Re: Action Plan item 3.2 Democratic Participation

Well, communication can be used as an excuse for a lot, and a lot of problems do arise from 'failure to communicate'. Scouts Canada has our mailing address, simple way to inform all. Word of mouth or sending the message verbally down the ranks is a standard practice that should be stopped for impor...

Re: We need a Scout Monument (oh wait a minute...we've got one!)

According to bits I've been able to dredge up from the internet, they are modeled after "The Boy Scout" by Dr Robert Tait McKenzie. Assuming the one on the left is close to a reproduction, it would be holding a hat in the left hand and the right hand is resting on a hatchet. The one on the right is ...

Re: Action Plan item 3.2 Democratic Participation

While I am inclined to agree that Policy 1014 is flawed, I am not sure that the election results are inaccurate or not valid, at least for our council. I worked as registrar for the council election committee for the first 2 elections. The first election we had similar results to your council, with ...

Things our group does...

Our group shares a common mailing list/bulletin board for leader-to-leader communications so everyone can know what the other sections are doing. Leaders from any section can contribute, and often do. This year we've tried creating the role of "linking czar" in each of the sections. That person is r...

Mass e-mails are useless (LONG)

Back in the day mass e-mails were a good way to reach a large number of people. Scouts Canada, the various councils, areas, groups and sections hopped on the e-mail bandwagon and started publishing newsletters, bulletins, and all manner of missives aimed at the membership. Time marched on and the tr...

Re: Light Weight Menu ideas?

I found some potentially interesting backpacking recipe books at scribd.com . It may answer Andrew's question and also gives me a chance to show off yet another undocumented technology that can be embedded into your posts. With Scribd's iPaper document reader, anyone can easily upload and share thei...

That's just the problem, you can't copy text from a PDF file unless you have the complete Adobe...I have the read only cause the complete is just too expensive for my needs and uses. ;) Errol, you can select text from a PDF using the Adobe Reader. Re: Scouting Now: An Action Plan for Canadian Scouting

I'm trying to right now but am having problems! My first attempt gave a warning that the file is too big. Garth The default limit for attachments was 800KB. It has been increased to 2MB which ought to be big enough for most purposes. Most files ought to be linked to from their originating website r...

Re: INTERACTIVE FORMS & APPLICATIONS

I think what you are asking for is difficult to implement given Scouts Canada's privacy policy ( BP&P 12000 ). How can National demonstrate compliance with their privacy policy with all sorts of electronic copies of personal information sitting on scouter hard drives? Sure it's going on today but at...

Re: INTERACTIVE FORMS & APPLICATIONS

I'm scratching my head over what the problem might be, but I am pretty sure it is not with the forms that can be downloaded from the Scouts Canada website. The YPPEF and AMAV are set up as forms and can be filled in within the Acrobat Reader. They cannot be saved with data using the 'Save' option, b...

I wouldn't think the choice of browser would make a difference since the browser doesn't directly manipulate a PDF file. Browsers use the Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in. Re: 5 Courses for Youth Leadership Development

You're right - the age restrictions were changed in July of 2008. For junior sections, the minimum age for the section contact leader was lowered from 21 to 18 for Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts. :oops:Thanks for clearing that up. I don't remember seeing age restrictions before. So I guess the answer to...

Have you had a look at the latest BP&P amendments published in March? Somebody has decided to put in age restrictions on section leaders!!! What were they thinking?

Hopefully somebody with more than just an opinion will weigh in on the subject.

In the meantime, I can't get out of my brain the thought that using chainsaws and brush cutters brings a whole new meaning to "Leave no trace".

Re: chainsaws & brush cutters

I don't feel qualified to interpret BP&P in a public forum so I won't. :D That being said I could find nothing explicit about the use of chainsaws in BP&P either. There may be something in Scouts Canada's insurance policy, or some other document or training that camp wardens may receive but it's out...

Re: Growing Venturers and Rovers: A Vision

Eventually, I see this kind of effort, at a Council or national level as becoming the Canadian equivalent of the Peace Corps. CUSO-VSO already laid claim to the title. Still, there's every reason why we should be doing similar work, or linking with them to the benefit of both programs. Katimavik do...
