Re: The Scout Shop

For at least the last two years, there have been serious issues identified on this board concerning Scout shop operations in September. Can anyone confirm whether the inventory and stocking issues have been resolved for September 2013?

Re: Geocaching for Beavers

We go geocaching a few times a year. When we go, we normally bring ~25 youth with us. Each lodge gets a GPS (pre-set) and we search for a few geo caches. After we placed ours last year, we followed the comments on it every few weeks using one of our leaders tablets. Our geocache is labelled as a Sco...

Re: Why do we do what we do?

Because it's fun. Leading youth on chases through the forest, teaching them to cook, sleep overs at cool museums, blowing stuff up (mentos in Diet Coke)... the list goes on. It's a great place to release all of that pent up creativity, set stuff on fire, impress and teach kids, and work with like mi...

Re: Keeo - how to?

IMHO, the ratio for Cubs is 1:6. So, the way I (selectively) read it is you can have 5 Beavers and 1 Cub. You make a good point about planning. Here are some others: Youth don't plan. They come up with ideas, but going from idea to execution isn't age appropriate for a Cub without coaching. They wil...

Re: "New" Chief Scout?

My colony and pack have played Mantracker twice. The first time, it was Scouter Stan Tracker. The second time, we tracked a Venturer. Both times, the youth had to walk through the forest to find clues "left" behind. They learned a lot from those games. They learned a lot of Scouting related stuff fr...

Re: "New" Chief Scout?

And personally I am not sure that I want a Bonty Hunter as a "role model" for my son... Did you read his bio http://www.scouts.ca/ca/news/scouts-canada-appoints-north-americas-renowned-tracker-and-wilderness-expert-chief-scout: Grant is best known as the star of the reality hit series, Mantracker, ...

Re: Keeo - how to?

Hi Roxy, In my experience, you need to do the following: 1) Assign a leader to brief the Keeo on the activities for the night. Give the Keeo specific instructions that are age appropriate and VERY specific. (tonight we are making crafts, I want you to help the Tiger lodge with scissors. That means I...

Re: Return to Made in Canada

Perhaps we can request that SC ensure that all future products are developed and purchased following an ethics policy similar to MEC? I doubt that between the cost of fabric, shipping, and labour that our leader shirts really cost $34.

Re: "New" Chief Scout?

Hi JB, I had a similar thought until I asked when had I seen the GG at any Scouting event in the past four years. Never. My group has even invited him to two events IN Ottawa (with plenty of advance notice). I am not saying he should jump just for us. But, in five years, I've never seen him. Terry G...

Re: Beaver musings...

Hi Roxy, I too have wondered about some of this. Starting youth older: In my experience, some kids are ready for Cubs their Blue Tail year (especially girls). The big problem I see is "cutting the umbillical cord", some kids, just won't leave Mom and Dad's side. Some kids are ready to go sooner. I o...

Re: Section Adventure Award

Hello everyone, Thanks for your replies. I am going to send Sandi Burns, the National Recognition Advisor* the links for these pages and recommend that SC consider this award. In the mean time, I need your help still. The Cub section needs an adventure award, perhaps even the Rover section. Any sugg...

Colony Adventure Award

Here is my first crack at a Colony Adventure Award. I have borrowed liberally from GAMSOCS. Please comment on this and help me improve it. Tom ------------------- Colony must participate in a two consecutive night family camping trip. Where possible, camp should involve use of tents. The exception b...

Re: Section Adventure Award

Yes, the leaders could do some of the reporting, but the youth can too. They can take pictures, draw pictures, write a few words, etc. Perhaps that can be incorporated into the award submission?

Section Adventure Award

I was reading the posts on the Venturers' Amory Adventure Award and wondered... why don't we have that for every section? No, Colonies won't be paddling hundreds of km to win the award, but if each section had an award, wouldn't that encourage the outdoor adventures that Scouts is trying to encourag...

Scouter Paul, How much are the youth actually doing? For instance, my group rarely goes on "hikes". Instead, we've Been "Mantracking" - tracking down the trail of another leader in the bush Done a cleaning walk. We walking from Pt A to B cleaning trash Working on a history walk. We walked the canal,...

Re: Aquatic Adventure Skills

There are two things I question about this. The first, I have to agree with Stan, is the price. For the first few levels, it's not too expensive. After that, the price goes way up. I am curious to see how SPICES will be woven into this skill. The second is why the focus on SCUBA. There is more to aq...

Re: Recruiting Leaders

When do you drop the ball on your prospective recruits that they will also be interviewed, need a PRC and must complete WBI? I let people know immediately. In fact, when I meet with all of the parents, I tell them then. But, I make it a positive thing. We offer training (WBI) and mentoring to help ...

Re: Who is responsible?

Hi Roxy, There are two ways IMHO to handle it: 1) Like Angus said. You are the leader and are responsible according to SC policy. So, where we go as a group, we must go together; 2) Agree that the parent is the boss. State that you will meet at point x ahead, parent and child can follow, all others ...

Nothing is wrong with Scouter if you are talking to fellow Scouters. People outside Scouting see us as "Scout Leaders". I choose to use the terms that the general public will understand.
