Re: "New" Chief Scout?

The issue is that Scouts Canada needs a prominent, public face to promote Scouting to the general public. Traditionally, this has been the Governor-General in their role as Chief Scout. However, except for handing out a few of the more prestigious awards and a few photo ops, most G-Gs have been too ...

Re: Rovers to get Milestone Recognition Program awards

Norma And now Alex and Sandi are saying that National is just "assuming" that all Rovers are "adult volunteers" and not "participants only". Something that the Rovers themselves have wanted the membership at large to stop doing ... Some of my Rover Scouts are convinced that Scouts Canada's ultimate ...

Re: Rovers to get Milestone Recognition Program awards

Sandi Robert, when you received the list pulled from the MyScouts database, did you contact Jeff Schaffhausser or myself with your concern? The Group Commissioners are a vital link in determining the Rovers status. The list you refered to was sent out twice to ensure that those listed are correct. I...

Re: Who is responsible?

Another option is to point to the new regulations related to the Child & Youth Safety Protocol. If the parent(s) haven't been cleared through those, then they shouldn't be along on the hike.

Re: Rovers to get Milestone Recognition Program awards

Errol, The Milestone Recognition Program was created as part of the Scouts Canada Volunteer Recognition and Development (VRAD) program before it was changed into the OSAs. The intent was to recognize Scouting Leaders every year for their first five years, after which they should have accomplished en...

Re: Rovers to get Milestone Recognition Program awards

I finally received the official answer yesterday: Currently, we do not differentiate in our reporting a Rover Scout Participant from a Rover aged member who also serves as a volunteer. Now that we've made a shift organizationally to expect all members aged 18 and over (regardless of involvement) to ...

Re: "God" stuff

Thanks for the idea Robert. And yes, I was looking through the existing RiL pamplets online. The reason I'm guessing it is (content wise at least) 20 + years old is because the closest one is from a denomination that is technically no longer around. It is one of the two denominations that merged to...

Re: "God" stuff

I should clarify a couple things. First, our sponsor is my church and they are active in supporting us. And when I referred to getting the RiL program on track with our sponsor, I was primarily referring to giving them the information they needed to come up with the appropriate criteria for all 5 s...

Re: "God" stuff

Angus, Actually, it is not up to Scouts Canada to have an RiL program. This is a matter that is to be dealt with solely in the youth's place of worship. Just in the Christian faith, the different churches have radically different requirements, and it is apparent that other faiths are similarly compl...

Re: Rovers to get Milestone Recognition Program awards

From Angus: I know what you mean now. Does create an interesting problem. A waste of SC resources at the very least, and sends an improper message to Rovers. From Sam the recognition for a job well done is good, and should be for youth also. the recognition for 10 years service should only go to som...

Re: Rovers to get Milestone Recognition Program awards

Angus, This is different than the Outstanding Scouter Award recognition which led to your daughter receiving a CoC. A few years ago, as part of the retention element of what had been VRA program, SC decided to honour leaders in the first five years of their service. After the first year, they'd rece...

Re: Rovers to get Milestone Recognition Program awards

Rick, Not yet. These e-mails are came from Sandi Burns (National Recognition Advisor) and Jeff Schaffhauser (Director, Volunteer Services). Not sure if it's actually a myscouts.ca question or one for them. Methinks it comes from the fact that Rovers are now registered as "Volunteers," even though th...

Rovers to get Milestone Recognition Program awards

Seems likes Rovers, who are now registered as "Volunteer Participants" are now eligible for awards under the Milestone Recognition Program. At least according to two e-mails I received. The first asked me to make sure all the info for the eligible Scouters in my Group was up-to-date. The second than...

Re: Lament for the Prairie Flower

We've been discouraged from using "Prairie Flower" in the Wellington Area for a few years now. Same reason was given: it was seen as embarassing for the youth and not a positive reinforcement. When the edict came down, it was interpreted by some as "Scouters won't ask the youth the do 'Prarie Flower...

Re: New Cub Badge Requirements

Here's a helpful link: http://ambientlight.ca/laws/overview/what-can-i-photograph/ As a journalist, I've learned a few things: 1) Even though it's a public place/event, if a person has a reasonable expectation of privacy, you need to respect that, e.g. a person worshipping in a church or atteneding ...

Re: Scouts on Twitter

On a purely personal note, please consider using a separate Twitter account for your Scouting activities. There is nothing that will get you "unfollowed" faster by me than a steady stream of the minutia of your daily personal life. "Hey, look at the sandwich I'm eating right now!" <PLONK> I want to...

Re: Voting manipulation?

My comments on Facebook: This, of course, is demonstrating a couple of things: 1) There are a few people who don't, or won't, understand the Scouts Canada electoral process which is clearly outlined in BP&P - Policy 1014 (Section 1000 page 11). It hasn't always been applied equally across the countr...

Re: Top Rover Award

The badges are part of an educational system. Badges need to be created with the purpose of making that educational system more effective. I also find that a badge program is a huge help in program planning - a definite help in the two senior sections where the youth plan the program. I found my Ve...

Re: Top Rover Award

I'm excited by this initiative and I believe Robin and the team will do a great job. My question...why, AGAIN, does this initiative have to be so rushed? This is the first announcement I've heard about this and the report has to be back in two months? A period which includes a week or more when peo...
