Re: Tree Climbing

Ha! No longer with Beavers, I have graduated to Troop. There's more push back and "So?" and "Fine, I'll do the paperwork!" or anything to postpone getting out of the tree esp. if the Scout is having a bad night (which happened last Spring; that particular Scout was having a very particularly bad nig...

Tree Climbing

Hello. I feel silly asking this but I want to ask about tree climbing. It's a great way for kids to demonstrate skill, derring-do, bravery to their friends, it's exercise, expressing how to move their bodies... And I'm sure it's not in any RMP I've seen. It's never been an issue until recently. I ha...

"Youth-led"

As I blitzed through the new Canadian Path Wood Badge this summer, I must have heard the term "youth-led" dozens of times. I am now a Troop scouter...and some of us still struggle with this. While some kids are happy to plan an event/meeting, we also can't get the older Scouts to come back to a meet...

Re: Sump Pit?

Don't dig a hole - and at any camp I've been to, we use the large gallon bucket and filter out food, scrape thoroughly before washing, etc. and where allowed, the grey water goes into the kybo. But the requirement is specific: I can use a shovel to build a camp greywater sump pit and close the pit w...

Re: Sump Pit?

That video? That's how we always encourage (strongly) our Scouts to clean their plates/cups/bowls prior to washing to stretch out the clean wash water as loooooooooooong as possible!

Girls and Scouting

At the risk of offending some: do other group include feminine supplies on their kit lists to remind the girl members or simply assume that the girls will remember? Looking at our 11-year-old female Cubs (moving up to Troop shortly thereafter) and just how much they had changed in three years (it's ...

Cuboree

So, this year there will be a Council cub camp. Other than badge trading, what can we expect from this kind of camp, other than a lot of Cubs? We are on the fence about attending as it is right after our annual area Camporee.

What is an Akela?

I've been approached to be Aklea next year. And I'm not sure I want the job. I've seen five different ones and each one very different from the other. I know it's a lot of work and commitment; but could it not be a more collaborative approach to it too? So, I ask this: What does Akela do? Not do? Wh...

Re: Scouts Canada Membership over last Five Years ??

I think I see the same things as BalooTwo: competing for time. In our house, we do Scouts and that's it. I don't have time for anything else and I really boggles my mind to think of those families who do scouts and music and violin and hockey and and and. We are full-time, fully committed to the pro...

Re: Winter camp locations - NCR/Ottawa Valley

We are not afraid to cook outside! At Camporee at Fitzroy, we have no choice! But it does make it easier. But our new Akela raised an interesting point when we were discussing where to have winter camp for 2016. If we get new leaders, not all of them were Cubs/Scouts as kids and not all of them have...

Re: When is a hornets nest a good idea to kick over?

Scouting as a weekly meeting event plus camps and a few extra Saturday events should not be a rich kid thing. If you start to factor (what I suspect costs a lost more) things like sailing and scuba diving, then there may be a problem. For some families, it is a question of "priorities." They may bal...

Re: Winter camp locations - NCR/Ottawa Valley

Hey there! Thanks for the tips.

Our future Akela is very keen - I found out yesterday he's already looked at Tamaracouta.

With so many camps in the area, I am surprised that more are not set up for winter camping. Oh well...

Winter camp locations - NCR/Ottawa Valley

Hey there! After a successful winter camp at Ope, we started thinking about next year's winter camp. I don't mind switching it up from year to year with the other leaders leaning towards using Ope again due to the conveniences. A fun discussion was had with the leaders and next year's Akela. It woul...

Re: Too school-like?

While looking for ideas for the World Citizen Award, I found this thread - The Canadian Heritage Trails Award is still in ScoutsTracker. But the actual award is no longer available? I was thinking of aiming for that one this year with the Cubs as it is an easy one to do. Indeed, I could not find it ...

Re: Cubs and respect

It turns out we do have a code of conduct and it was drafted up two years ago, before I moved up to Pack. I had no clue (that will teach me not to explore the shared drive). However, if it is not reviewed each year to remind returning Cubs and introduced to new Cubs, then it is not useful. Returning...

Re: Slaughtering the Sacred Cow: Ratio

Two deep - is that when alone with a child? If you are with five of them, outdoors, leading a station, can you be one leader? Or is that okay only if within eyesight of another leader?

Cubs and respect

In light of recent events in my pack - cliques, exclusion, play wrestling instead of being in circle, talking out of turn, not listening when a leader is talking - I am thinking of doing a night about respect. And I welcome any ideas that have worked for you. I understand that the vast majority of C...

Re: Blue Star question...

We are still waiting to hear back from OC Transpo.

I should try calling the radio stations. There are a few in town but the distance is a buzz kill for some parents who already run tardy on a good night.

Re: Blue Star question...

We are in Ottawa. There are a couple of small airports in the area but the other challenge is doing something on a Monday night. When events are moved to weekends, the numbers drop. I have my fingers crossed for the OC Transpo depot. There would be a lot of buses in there...and the depot is not far ...

Blue Star question...

So, this year we are working on Blue and Green stars. Two of the blue star requirements are proving to be challenging: Visit a communications service, such as a newspaper plant, telephone exchange, printing press, radio or TV station, etc. Tell about or make a scrapbook of your visit. Visit a transp...
