Re: Sunshine and lollipops

Guides in my area used to have one registration night for the whole town 6 spark groups 5 brownie groups 3 Guide groups 2 pathfinder 1 ranger group all registered in one room, at one time. grouped by ages, all displayed when and where they met. then you could pick meetings that work, and interview t...

Re: Girls and Scouting

To me the way to list it on the kit list would be necessary health and sanitary supplies. a boy with an incontinence issue would be covered by that also, and it doesn't single anyone out. bringing some backup is probably a good idea. The supplies are actually useful in serious bleeding first aid cas...

Re: Scouts Canada Membership over last Five Years ??

need to make sure we are not just a parent in a red shirt

Of all the issues you raise this is the one that in my limited experience I see the most of. Sure they might mean well, but do they do scouting things? do they know what scouting is?

Re: Scouts Canada Membership over last Five Years ??

in 2009 we had a plan to radically increase membership by 2015. Didn't happen

viewtopic.php?f=19&t=161

At some point I recall steve kent saying that if we dont fix the membership drop we would be out of biz by 2020. Seems likely to happen.

Re: What is an Akela?

I agree with what Norma says. I have gone thru 5 Akela's and all were different. sit with the leaders who will be there and ask what they can do. I cant spend the time booking camps, events etc but I can for sure help with the scoutcraft and such. So we divide accordingly.

Re: Scouts Canada Membership over last Five Years ??

I have no clue. If anything I could ascribe motive against expansion, its a lot of work I am sure, and once the group is up and running its still one more group to watch.

Re: Scouts Canada Membership over last Five Years ??

Hawkeye, that stat bothers me also. The silo mentality bothers me more. I live in a growing community. if we get to similar numbers every year then we call that good enough, where in a growing community we should grow, right? But we have no real communication with other groups. I look at guides in m...

Re: Scouts Canada Membership over last Five Years ??

I am betting that more than the fee the fact that we have no standards, and dont interest kids to stay is driving the registration down. Sure there are good groups, but there are loads of bad ones. We register 10000 beavers a year, but very few of those get to scouts. Will this change with the path,...

Re: Scouts Canada Membership over last Five Years ??

I like your optimism. I don't share it. I doubt that our new NYC knows this forum exists. Certainly while it may be official its rarely if ever used. Which is a shame but another topic. On the numbers not matching I recall a commissioner (Council or National, cant recall) a few years ago issued a pu...

Re: SCOUTS: Explorer Of The Year Award

I like the idea of them choosing the media for submission. good idea

WRT 5 km, for lightweight thats not bad. Jody knows more about vertical adventure than I ever will, but I think lightweight isnt pulling a sled, its having everything on your back.

The real question is, will this ever happen?

Re: Paddling Skills

Hawkeye, for years I wanted to take our pack canoeing. No dice, the leaders lacked confidence in the idea. So it didn't happen, I for a while was the new guy in. change Akela, twice, and I was more well known to the leaders, and among the most seasoned, suddenly, its a good idea. we did our training...

Hawkeye has it right. As long as you have some form of spiritual belief most groups would welcome you.

Re: Rovers (those with scouter experience) training ALs and

Heck, why restrict it to training youth? if a Rover knows their stuff, let them teach adults. I can learn stuff from my cubs, no reason I couldn't learn a lot more from a rover, at least as part of a training team. I only add that last caveat so that the adults receiving the training know the Rover ...

Re: Rovers (those with scouter experience) training ALs and

Probably a great idea, if sufficient rovers and SIT can be found, in close geographic proximity. I drove an hour each way to WBI, but I was 30 years old. the same may be difficult for a 15 year old. you would want this as a help to the youth, but not to hinder any opportunities to take training. Tra...

Re: Slaughtering the Sacred Cow: Ratio

It would be nice to know the reason why on Ratio. Perhaps those who designed the current ratio figured that it would get more trained, skilled and enthusiastic leaders with the kids. instead the drive for ratio gets anyone who's arm can be twisted, resulting in leaders who know squat, and care less....

We did visit the airport, they have a program for kids in Calgary, not a tour, there isnt a hope in heck of a behind the scenes tour of an airport. touring an airline hanger might have more potential. Scored a tour once of the Westjet hanger in calgary, and before that a tour of the AC hanger where ...
