Re: Scouts Canada Membership over last Five Years ??

I haven't looked at this forum for awhile and am happy to see some substantive discussion about an issue of concern to me — the dissonance between what SC says about membership growth and what the numbers show. Having worked for a publicly traded company, providing rigorous information for the Manag...

Re: BadgeMagic

Any thoughts based on experience since the last posting on this topic 1 1/2 years ago? Reading the postings, I see that people have problems with both ironing and Badge Magic. I heard from a Pack Scouter: "I can tell you we have loads of Cubs with badges hanging off their uniforms where attempts hav...

Re: New System Age Restrictions!

Looking back at this thread, a formal statement of policy was promised on the deadline for turning 5. Can somebody direct me to this? FYI we have had no problem registering Beavers who turn 5 after Sept. 1, several in the past couple of years. However, a parent wants to push the deadline back into t...

further to earlier post on Rainbow Loom, here is an alternative which was posted on Miniscouts Yahoo group:

Re: Beaver Woggles

at our first meeting after Christmas there were a couple of woggles made with Rainbow Loom. I know one was made by an older brother. Have heard of Beaver age kids using Rainbow Loom but don't plan to get into it for our Colony. if you haven't encountered this yet see http://www.rainbowloom.com/ - ve...

Re: Section Flags, Pole Mounts, etc.

We are planning to replace some of our Section flags. Would like to add our Group identification to these - any suggestions on how to do? Have been told that silkscreening will not work on the fabric.

Geocaching for Beavers

Our Colony had a brief introduction to geocaching at a recent meeting (by a parent whose family are enthusiastic geocachers) then went out and found two caches in the neighbourhood and placed our own cache including a trackable. This was a very successful event. We will certainly include in our prog...

Re: Keeo - how to?

Worth mentioning is the role of Keeos in our annual Council camp for Beavers. Keeos are important members of the camp staff and are welcome to participate in planning meetings (which are short and efficiently run). Typically they have attended the camp in previous years; many are the children of adu...

Re: Keeo - how to?

Have been pondering an answer to this since the first post but was too busy with other things to provide a detailed response. A few comments: I have been happy to see the contribution of our Keeos since my son took on the role in the late 1980s. At that time our Regions put on Keeo training courses ...

Re: Recruiting Leaders

this may help http://www.scouts.ca/sites/default/files/sl-Last-Word_%20Why-Parents-Should-Become-Volunteers.pdf (by our former AC) Our Colony has run well for years with three leaders without children in the section (one just retired after 25 years). Parents come in for a couple of years then move u...

Re: New Joe Fresh Uniforms Really Disapointing

Interesting Scouting connection to another organization whose members wore green shirts: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hargrave who left the Boy Scouts to found a less militaristic organization http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kibbo_Kift then took up with Social Credit and his organization became th...

Point noted. I thought I had an automatic login when I visited; seems to have gone off the rails awhile back so I reinstated. So I am no longer an anonymous visitor.

Good discussion on important topics lately - keep it coming!

Re: Early Registration Fee Deadlines.

Our Group has been doing spring registration successfully for several years. At least for Colony and Pack we get close to 100% done in the spring. The discount is helpful but the big motivator is that space in these sections is at a premium so parents know there is unlikely to be any room if they wa...

Re: Hi, New to the Scouts Interested for Kids

Good idea to find a nearby group with the sections for your childrens' ages, talk to leaders and visit a meeting to see the activities they do. Prospective members are allowed to visit two meetings before deciding to join. To find a group, http://www2.scouts.ca/dnn/Default.aspx?alias=www2.scouts.ca/...

Re: Half Year Rate - 2011-12

Again this year I had to ask when and how much - finally got the information unoficially but haven't seen anything official yet from our Counci. I recommended that the fee reduction should be announced jointly with the Bring a Friend campaign - hard to promote membership when you don't know the pric...

There are many types of model kits available ranging from snap-together plastic kits to much more complex, involving cutting and gluing wood etc. At the very least they require some skill in following instructions. I note this badge includes making toys as well as models. Being rather traditionally ...

Re: Beavers Activity Badges

Attached is a photo of a sample of the wall hanging I mentioned (just the example we showed the Beavers so badges not sewn on). Got some nice faux fur material from the discount fabric store which will be more durable than felt. It was challenging for the Beavers to sew the material around the stick...
