A "Rope Challenge" Activity

Danger!! Trying to teach about knots to a bunch of active Scouts often gets really boring for the kids, and very frustrating for the Leaders. To reduce this danager we have to make this learning a lot more fun and active. One way is to play to the Scouts' desire for a challenge. The 'Instructions' ...

Re: Resource for "Working with Youth"

I'd suggest that the approaches presented by Scouter Burdon apply to working with ALL youth -- not just ones with special needs. At first I wasn't going to read the second part of the book about working with disabilities, but when I got into it I found the tips provided really applied to everyone, j...

Focus on Growth?? NO! Focus on Leaders & Program Delivery

The focus on growth and numbers suggests a self serving "Institutional" organization more concerned with supporting a bureaucracy than delivering a quality program. Provide lots of fun, stimulating activities and you will get youth. It's been proven over and over. Deliver a poor program with untrain...

Resource for "Working with Youth"

First: I've just finished reading a great book I picked up at the Scout Shop -- " Working Effectively with Youth, and With Youth with Disabilities ", by Michael J. Burdon, B.A., B.S.W., R.S.W. (Baico Publishing Inc., 2009) This book should be 'required reading' for ALL leaders, and certainly as part...

CBC Radio 1 "Ontario Today" Program Aug.11 - Should listen

By chance I happened to hear the last half of this CBC radio program. They introduced it as about the Girl Guides selling one of their camps and the controversy that the sale generated. (Sound familiar??) But the relevant part for Scouting was the "phone-in" portion on this item, where the host aske...

Re: Scouting Now: enhancing our image

The Report used the UK example of getting good PR and "reestablishing their expertise". But wait a minute. >> It was said in the Report that Net Geners aren't influenced by "the media" -- so why go after that? >> They are influenced by their peers. So, give one youth a great experience, and you'll h...

Youth Involvement

The best approach to 'youth involvement' is still far from clear. >> The debate is not whether it's a good or bad thing, but HOW it should be implemented. Speaking from the perspective of a Troop Scouter, I offer the following observations: ** Any 'structure' that allows youth involvement could be m...

Attracting Volunteers

The Background point #5 of the Action Plan re "Risk taking" gets at the crux of the matter. I'd add two more issues that influence our ability to attract volunteers: 7. W e live in an overly "protective" / "litigious" society. Parents especially are quick to try to find "someone to blame" for whatev...

Re: Scouting Now: reaching the Facebook generation

I was most interested in the notes on the "Net Geners" (love the term!). Terms like "integrity and openness", "intense scrutiny", have impacts on the way Scouting as an organization should be performing. And a lot apply to how we deliver the program -- "freedom to choose", "entertainment and play", ...

Re: Scouting Now: enhancing our image

Sorry, but I can't agree that our number 1 priority is "development of effective web and new media presences". Yes, this has to be done, but it's not "priority number one". The priorities are looking after Program Delivery and Leadership.

Re: Scouting Now: Leadership

re. Action Item 1 - Background. Yes, most of what is now Part I Training is really 'orientation' to Scouting (i.e. BPP!, resources, etc.), and can easily be done 'out of the book' or 'on-line'. But, to be really effective new leaders have to learn more than just Rules and Procedures and what forms a...
