Re: Refugees

Our priority should be in translating the Code of Conduct (so parents can be involved in any supporting role) and a (voice over?) translation of the youth safety video (required for parents to attend an overnight event). Then we can have some parental involvement (halal cooking at camp, for example).

Re: Cub Scout Fishing Badge Question

I can't find an online source for what an old English verb "toe" means here. Fortunately, the Cub Book page online has been updated replacing "toe" with "use". http://www.scouts.ca/sites/default/files/green-fishing.pdf Now... "outfit" on the other hand: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/outfit ...

New Colony leader names?

With the program revitalization, are the names for Colony leaders looking to change? Looking at http://www.scouts.ca/canadianpath/cp1/pond.html, it seems we are adding Echo and Rascal. Perhaps also dropping Sunshine and Bubbles. Can anyone confirm? According to the Scout Shop, we are no longer able ...

Re: Blue Star question...

We were fortunate as one of our leaders is working as a driver. He arranged the tour, but was working an unable to be present at that time. His son did get to talk to him through the radio at the dispatch centre, which was pretty neat. The do have someone on staff to arrange these things. Try sendin...

Re: Blue Star question...

Our Transit does tours. The highlight for the kids was taking a bus through the bus-wash. Since your transit terminal is near your meeting hall, it would be great to have them see the inside of it! We also visited our local radio station. (Funny how the only way to keep some kids to be quiet is to p...

Re: Slaughtering the Sacred Cow: Ratio

Thanks Norma for that update! (And thanks for quoting BP&P "scripture", it is very helpful.) This is a confusing (and often contentious) topic, so I think a quick reference summary is in order! Please check out http://wiki.scouts.ca/en/Ratio and let me know if any changes are needed to it. (Or bette...

Re: Slaughtering the Sacred Cow: Ratio

Yeah, it might be arbitrary, but the organization has to set the standard at something. Keep in mind that the ratios also help the Scouters from being overwhelmed or overrun! Will it might make sense to have different ratios for different risk-level activities, it is much easier to administer a sing...

Re: Cubs, you think you can cook?

This is a neat idea, we might just have to steal it. Also might be good for a winter time activity too! Many grocery stores have community rooms that they will lend out free, so long as you purchase any and all food in the store (which fits this activity well). Yes, to keep them in their sixes. Grea...

Re: New Joe Fresh Uniforms Really Disapointing

Perhaps we should update the "20 Things You Need To Know" in the "New Scouter Welcome Kit". http://www.scouts.ca/nswk/new/docs/nswk-2014-en.pdf 15. The shirts ARE washable. 20. YES — the shirts are washable! (Well worth mentioning twice!) When doing an orientation, I always point these out and repla...

Re: BadgeMagic

The dark stain under the Badge Magic is definitely a problem. I've tried Goo Gone, lighter fluid (being careful not to spill/leak/seep to neighbouring badges), and laundry stain remover. Only managed to reduce the stain, not eliminate. So... this IS a problem when replacing badges with something sma...

Re: Questions about Chief Scout's Award

I varies, of course, but I am a fan of a three-way partnership on this. The youth, the leadership team, and the parent(s). In theory the youth only approach should work, but in my experience without the guidance and support of the leadership, and the support and encouragement of parents, youth succe...

Re: Camp Maintenance

Try going "up the chain of command" and talking to your Area service team. (Unless it is a Council operated camp.) Yes, Camp Committees are volunteer run. Like all things volunteer run, they can go through times of challenge and low participation. It's a real problem. Your Area/Council needs to be a...

Re: Suggestions for Winter Conservation Projects?

We've been thinking about this as well, mainly because we have a Troop member working on his Chief Scouts' Award and needs an environmental project to run. See http://wiki.scouts.ca/en/World_Scout_Environment_Award_-_Scouts It's a bit cold for our typical beach cleanup, which we will probably do in ...

Re: Section Flags, Pole Mounts, etc.

We badge-magic'd the Quality Award to the Pack flag. Looks nice! I was thinking of doing the same with the section insignia and sponsor patch. It's small, but readable up close and gives a distinctive look. I do like the "bigger and better" look of the Mountaineer Scouts at 5th West Vancouver. Very ...

Agreed!

Of course this will add to the problem of mini-figs out numbering actual people within 6 years. (See http://xkcd.com/1281/)

But, yicks!, those are expensive!

Re: BadgeMagic

Good and bad! It is great for handing out badges. Getting the kids (well.... the parents) to sew them on has always been a challenge. Even safety pinning them in place meant they would remain in pins for months/years. We now cut badge magic on the badges for them youth. (The pre-cut sheets are highl...

Re: Service bars

The use of BadgeMagic is encouraged, then the pain of sewing the separated service bars goes away. I suspect the sale of separate badges are so that individuals can purchase exactly what is needed, rather than relying solely on the group purchasing and distributing. (I have to admit, we are not good...

Great idea! I hope others can add some good ideas.

(BTW, I changed the title to shorten it up by removing the Scouts Canada Wiki prefix. Shortens the URL too.)

The page deserves a crest... so I added one!
