Ideas for Individual Cub Specialty Badge

I am looking for some ideas to help our Cubs design their Individual Cub Speciality Badge. What have you used? Do you have some pre-designed requirements? Have you used Cub badges from other countries that we do not have? For example:

Australia

Singapore
http://www.scout.org.sg/Youth/images/CU ... Badges.pdf

UK

Looking forward to your insight and suggestions.

Re: Ideas for Individual Cub Specialty Badge

The individual specialty badge ought to be an opportunity for the youth to develop their own badge in a area of interest to them. It is also a great opportunity for your Sixers Council to get together and review/approve the badge requirements.

One cub in our pack designed his individual specialty badge around robotics because he was really into Lego Mindstorm.

My son modeled his specialty badge in skateboarding after existing badges for snowboarding, skiing, and bicycling. A close approximation of it was picked up by 1st Stittsville for their Pack specialty badge the following year. The big difference was simplifying some of the skills to be more accessible to the average cub. Here's the link to 1st Stittville's badge requirements from the Carleton Area website. Compare it to the other Red Star badges to see the similarities.

While I'm yakking about skateboarding, here's a picture from when my son was a Beaver.

Re: Ideas for Individual Cub Specialty Badge

Thanks Karl - great photo. I can only imagine what he can do now!

There is one Cub that wants to use Lego Robotics for his Cub Speciality Badge. Do you have the requirements for inspiration?

Thanks for pointing me to the Carleton Area web site. There are some other great ideas there too. The feedback I have received is not comming up with great topics for the badge. Rather it's how to write the requirements. You solidified this for me when you showed me the skateboarding requirements.

Some of the foreign badges that I thought would make interesting starting points for Cub Speciality Badges - the idea is to choose badges that we do not have over here. Not to pick one we do have:

* Codes & Signal from Australia - https://www.vicscouts.asn.au/Cubs/Docs/ ... ignals.pdf
* Engineer from Australia - https://www.vicscouts.asn.au/Cubs/Docs/ ... gineer.pdf
* Flight from Australia - https://www.vicscouts.asn.au/Cubs/Docs/Green-Flight.pdf
* Scientist from Australia - https://www.vicscouts.asn.au/Cubs/Docs/ ... entist.pdf
* Weather from Austrlia - https://www.vicscouts.asn.au/Cubs/Docs/ ... eather.pdf
* Communicator from Singapore
* Local Historian from Singapore
* Road Safety from Singapore
* Scientist from Singapore
* Writer from Singapore
* Local Knowledge from UK - https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportre ... cub-scouts
* Martial Arts from UK - https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportre ... cub-scouts
* Scientist from UK - https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportre ... cub-scouts
* Road Safety from UK - https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportre ... cub-scouts
* Personal Safety from UK - https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportre ... cub-scouts
* Air Activities from UK - https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportre ... cub-scouts
* Communicator from UK - https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportre ... cub-scouts
* Equestrian from UK - https://members.scouts.org.uk/supportre ... cub-scouts

From talking to a couple of Cubs about this, there is a "cool" factor about doing a badge from another country. What would be icing on the cake is if I could find/buy the international badge and give it to them for their campfire blanket.

Thanks

David

Re: Ideas for Individual Cub Specialty Badge

A couple of years ago, one of our Scouts did the US model railroading badge. He was nuts over model railroading. A very nice US Scout leader sent up the merit badge booklet and arranged a badge examiner. He did all the requirements and they met at CJ and the badge was presented in a ceremony. He wore the badge on his sash. Yes, I know all this is illegal and we should all be shot at dawn, but it was amazing for the kid; and that is all that matters to me.

Re: Ideas for Individual Cub Specialty Badge

We're designing one as a lightweight-camping themed badge that acts as a requirement to go on Scub camps.

Re: Ideas for Individual Cub Specialty Badge

Definitely a little different tone, But the Specialty I earned was the "Dancer's Badge" with some technical requirements, some research/history requirements and a performance requirement- I danced at our BP Banquet for everyone! (I was probably adorable)

Other Cub ones I've seen include Writing, Robotics,and ATVing
