Re: Swim-up/Going up Traditions?

And will we do it again this year??? Mmmm, maybe?

Gotta keep it fresh.

And a few on the GC, me included, are getting the vibe that when you have an awesome going-up ceremony... and then follow it up with $500 worth of pizza... somewhere in there the ceremony gets lost on a few.

Two years ago when my youngest was due to move up to Scouts he was sick and missed his ceremony and the banquet. The following week one of the Scout Leaders with a big in-ground pool hosted a pool party. And it began with a going-up ceremony just for my son. They strung a rope from one end of the pool to the other. All all the Cub Leaders (me included) saluted him and helped him onto an inflatable raft... in full uniform. He grabbed the rope.... and the Scouts pulled him to the other end of the pool where they all waited in their horseshoe. All the Scout Leaders helped him off the raft.. saluted and welcomed him into the troop... all were in full dress uniform. He saluted the troop and they came up and shook his hand and welcomed him in. They did a formal flag raising ceremony. And then they had a massive 2 hour pool party that ended with cake and ice cream and another formal closing/flag lowering and a final salute to their newest troop member. I heard some of them say "why couldn't our going-up ceremony be as cool as his was?"

So having a going-up ceremony that is ceremony followed by shock-n-awe fun and games and then ending with an apporopriate "why we're here" finishing ceremony might get more enthusiasm this year.

I like the trail ceremony.

But I am not against doing something totally new and fun and WOW!

Time will tell?

RakelaK:

Can I join your Group? :)

Please?

Seriously, you've got to start posting this stuff on the Scout Wiki. You and your fellow Scouters bring a lot of good ideas with a huge helping of enthusiasm to your kids, and as a result, you've got an amazingly successful Group.

LOL! ... Good you can be a Scout leader. Our poor troop's leadership got decimated in the past couple of week's by Scouter work schedules and Scouter business travel conflicts. They'll get it figured out in the next few weeks. But in the meantime they had to postpone their Winter camp. And our Winter is so unpredictable. When they get it back on the calendar... it might be Cold n Muddy camp
