Resource for "Working with Youth"

First:
I've just finished reading a great book I picked up at the Scout Shop -- "Working Effectively with Youth, and With Youth with Disabilities", by Michael J. Burdon, B.A., B.S.W., R.S.W. (Baico Publishing Inc., 2009)

This book should be 'required reading' for ALL leaders, and certainly as part of any Part I Woodbadge training course. It describes exactly how Scouters should be working with their youth in constructive ways -- not just to Do program, or Earn Badges, but to really help in their personal development. Scouter Burdon lays out clearly the traits expected of Leaders, and provides specific, positive approaches to many common situations that constantly arise in section activities. His attitude and experience are an inspiration to all of us.

Second:
Does anyone know of other resources for more ideas on effectively working with Youth?? -- please post a reply.

Re: Resource for "Working with Youth"

Scouter Bob, Mike Burdon taught me at my WB II last March, and my wife got the benefit of his knowledge at ScoutCOM in April (Voyageur Council). I bought his book and read it cover to cover, as has my wife. I agree with you wholeheartedly, as every sections tends to have one or two higher-needs kids each year, and sometimes you get more than one or two. This book is an excellent resource. I'll post later with some other stuff I've dug up.

Re: Resource for "Working with Youth"

I'd suggest that the approaches presented by Scouter Burdon apply to working with ALL youth -- not just ones with special needs. At first I wasn't going to read the second part of the book about working with disabilities, but when I got into it I found the tips provided really applied to everyone, just with a 'bent' to a particular special circumstance.

I look forward to seeing some of your resource suggestions.
