Camp work day suggestions

The residential construction company for which my wife works does a days work at the local Boys & Girls club camp each year. This past Saturday my wife coerced me into volunteering to join in (it was the first event since my wife started working at this company). Here are some comments on how the work day went, in particular in comparison to my knowledge of some Scout camp work days. The intention is to give the people organising the Scout camp work days some ideas for the future.

  • Treated as a "family picnic" for the company. Spouses, children, and dogs welcome.
  • No charge for participants.
  • Dogs roamed free all day.
  • Meals provided. Though the food wasn't great. The food at our local council camp is superior, though even that leaves a little to be desired at times.
  • Hot showers and flush toilets provided.
  • Cabin accomodation.
  • Skilled adult labour versus either unskilled adult or kids labour at Scout camp work days.
  • Kids worked too, but did unskilled work.
  • Many companies come on various weekends.
  • Suppliers provide materials via donation or at cost.
  • Treated as a party by the workers (i.e. alcohol flowing freely)
  • Lots of significant building projects accomplished.
  • Groups like fire fighters and choirs go up too. They do things like painting.
  • Baby sitting (with activities) for little kids during the day.
  • High ropes course for big kids as a treat in the afternoon.
  • Big fireworks display (paid for by the company).
  • Snacks and drinks brought to the work site during the day for breaks.
  • Campfires in the evening.
