Group History

When I was a kid, I was involved in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. Unfortunately, the groups that I belonged to no longer exist. Does anyone know where I can find information on them like when they were formed, when they closed, or any other records?

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Group History

A quick search didn't turn up anything. Especially pre-internet it seems unlikely much information would have survived. Head Office might have financial records, but I don't imagine they would have much else.

Depending on how long ago they closed, what was District should have the files somewhere in their archives. If not try at Council level and then at Baseline VIA your CED. Someone must know the answer to this. Perhaps you can find out who the District Commissioner was in that period and ask there.

Re: Group History

Definitely try and get in touch with your council office. In Northern Lights council we have a fantastic and very active museum committee that sorts through old records, certificates, equipment, and etc. They can tell you about any group to ever exist here! I'm not sure if the rest of the councils are so lucky, but it doesn't hurt to ask!

Re: Group History

I did some research on the history of our group a while ago. The council office had the registration records going back to 1935. A few of the recent years had been lost, but overall it was very interesting. Having time on my hands at that point, I transcribed all the old registration records.

The book "75 Years of Scouting in Canada" may happen to have a page on your group. It did for us.

Everything I found on our group, and some general Scouting history, is available at http://1stmerrickville.ca/history/.

The national Scout museum in Ottawa (http://1stmerrickville.ca/museum/) has a set of books where every kids in Scouting on a given date in the 1970's or 80's wrote there name on a sheet for the group. That's kind of neat.

Also check the local historical society, and any of the sponsors the group had.
