A Pocket Guide for Leaders

Let's put a visioning document in the shirt pocket of every Tuesday Night Hero.

As an organization Scouts Canada is just as guilty of making its materials "unreadable" as WOSM, albeit for different reasons.* If someone is unlikely to read a nice document with interesting content like Scouting: An Educational System then I'll venture that they're at least as unlikely to read the BP&P. Let's solve this problem and start giving our leaders a common culture that they can draw on: put a visioning/leadership resource in the shirt pocket of every trained leader.

What would this be? A collection of inspirational facts/figures/stories alongside the ABSOLUTELY need to know parts of the BP&P. Things that are unlikely to change but that matter a lot, like the "Duty of Care" and the "Screening Chart", would go in there. Even better would be an explanation of WHY they are what they are so that when events not covered by our policies happen in the field (as they frequently do) then the leaders will have a resource to guide them to make a decision. It would be the size of the old BP&P. We would give it to every trained leader. Best of all would be a collection of important Scouting stories, facts and figures to inspire and motivate.

* Most of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) documents are commonly agreed to be a little long. I think this is a function of being precise. The downside is that while it is certainly clear and easy to read, it appears daunting to many. This is unfortunately the downfall of almost every single document in the WOSM library; while all excellent resources most are long, text heavy, and written in a slightly academic/formal tone and I think that most potential readers find this combination slightly off-putting. I think this is true even of the leaders of National Scout Organizations for whom the majority of the WOSM documents are meant (at least it seems to have been in the past for ours, anyway).

Interesting how many reads your message has received but no comments. I take that to mean that nobody has any strong or vehement objections. I would suppose they even like the idea.

I further suppose that the reason nobody has suggested anything is that they either don't know what to do or they don't want to make one!

So...since nobody else will, I'll be happy to assemble such a document if people provide ideas or samples of what they might want. I wonder if there are really thin binders or folders so that existing copies of the guide could have pages swapped out as new material comes out?

Great Errol! Let's start by making a list of some of the items that are 'must haves':

-Promise/Law/Motto/Slogan
-a brief history section
-duty of care and screening chart like John mentioned
-some inspirational stories, perhaps a small collection of Scouter Five, not too many but a bunch on a variety of topics in order for a leader to have something just in case
-how about some knot diagrams?

What else?

Re: A Pocket Guide for Leaders

How about some "old favorite" song and skit titles for when you have to come up with something on short notice?

Maybe a rIsk assement chart for each section? I saw one somewhere once, it looked like a spreadsheet.

Great ideas for the songs and skits. Can you elaborate on the risk assessment chart? What was it's function?

How about a short bibliography of good and useful Scouting books, including books such as "Camping and Wilderness Survival"; "St. Johns' Wilderness First Aid Guide"; pioneer books; etc., and list the websites where such informnation is available. Also some good "old-fashioned" Scouting books such as those on Grumpy's website. Back later when I have given it some more thought.

- Not only Scouters' Fives, but a couple of Scouts Own outlines.
- Some multi-faith prayers for openings and closings, along with graces other than Johnny Appleseed :D
- Some quick craft ideas
- Ceremonies - opening, closing, investiture - for each section

What great ideas! I think it would be a wonderful thing to have - there have been many times I needed a quick answer or suggestion and would have welcomed the idea of a pocket book. Good luck gentleman and I will be the first in line to buy your new book!

Re: A Pocket Guide for Leaders

I'm curious, aside from size, how is this pocket guide going to be different from the Leader Guide that SC publishes for each section?

Those guides could easily be turned to pocket-sized books.
