iPod Touch / iPhone Applications

I have found a couple of free and paid applications on the iTunes Store that I used on my iPod Touch:

* Free - What knot to do - you guessed it... it shows you how to tie knots
* Free - Tree ID - tree recognition database
* $9.99 - iBird Explorer - Bird recognition database with great image and sound

Anyone else found some gems?

Re: iPod Touch / iPhone Applications

I have put together a iPhone/iPod Touch app that:

a) encapsulates all the badge and award information found in the Canadian Scouting Handbook
b) lets you mark requirements as complete, or bookmark them for quick access
c) presents the youths' progress through the achievement awards in an easy-to-understand format

It features:
- support for storing records for the entire troop
- information is accessible via multiple iPhones/iPod Touches, or via a desktop browser
- updates made while off-line (e.g., at camp) are automatically sync'd to a remote database when you next reconnect to the internet
- differentiated accounts for leaders vs. scouts/parents (scout/parent accounts offer bookmarkable views of specific scouts)
- fully self-administratable (e.g., leaders can manage logins, and add/remove scouts)
- quick data entry, by marking entire badges as complete, optionally for multiple scouts simultaneously
- a GUI geared towards progressing the scouts through the core program achievements (Pioneer->Voyageur->Pathfinder->Chief Scout's)
- per-scout bookmarking, to enable quick access to badges of interest

Note, the app itself is free, and can be used to your heart's content to manage a single scout's records (i.e., "personal" mode). However, to use the app to manage an entire troop's records (i.e., "group" mode) will require an on-line database that will normally cost a nominal fee per year.

However, this summer I'm looking for a few individuals who are interested in actively beta testing the "group" aspects of app. If you're interested, please email me at scouter.dave@1stnepean.ca and I'll set you up with the repository that'll store your troop's records.

Cheers,

[Sorry, the current version only supports Troop, not Pack. The Pack edition will come shortly after the official release of the Troop edition.]

Re: iPod Touch / iPhone Applications

Hello everyone, I wanted to mention that the Pack version is now available.

To access the apps, browse to either of

http://scout-badges.com/scouts
http://scout-badges.com/cubs

iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch users can save the app to their home screen to enable off-line use.

If you want an account to manage your troop records, just email me at scouter.dave@1stnepean.ca

Cheers,
Dave

Re: iPod Touch / iPhone Applications

This would be even more awesome if it could somehow tie into the new membership database and have it populated automatically w/ our members names!

Unless I'm mistaken (I was not at the presentation in person) Dave was one of the people presenting this past weekend on AMS.

One of the long term goals of AMS is to have a badge tracking system.

Re: iPod Touch / iPhone Applications

Free Scouting related apps I like - Knot Guide, Skyview, Planet Finder and Satellites.

Paid Scouting related apps I like - Geocaching

Tree ID is not free (anymore).

Might have to try the scout-badges.com for Cubs website...I am very bad at record keeping though.
